Ascites
Physicians refer to ascites as an abnormal accumulation of free fluid in the abdominal cavity. A common term for ascites is dropsy. Ascites is not a standalone disease but a symptom of serious illnesses. In most cases, dropsy is a consequence of liver cirrhosis. The second most common cause is cancer.
Ambulatory surgery will be performed to place an ascites drain to relieve the patient. This helps to remove abdominal fluid from the body and relieve pressure.
