Stroke

A stroke is a circulatory disorder in the brain. It is caused by the blockage or rupture of a blood vessel.

The most common causes are narrowing or blockage of neck or brain arteries, blood clots traveling from the heart, or damage to small brain arteries.

Risk factors such as high blood pressure, elevated blood lipids, aneurysm, nicotine use, and diabetes mellitus promote stroke.

The risk of stroke can be reduced by eating a healthy diet, abstaining from nicotine, avoiding stressors, and exercising regularly.

Risk patients (people with high blood pressure, heart disease „infarction“, circulatory disease patients, diabetes mellitus, high blood lipids, post-stroke condition) should regularly see a vascular surgeon for a preventive examination using duplex sonography.
